Restore Mobile Debuts ARPA-funded Cottages

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — Restore Mobile unveiled three newly constructed, period-style homes on May 29 that contribute to Mobile's architectural heritage and community revitalization.
The Marine Street Cottages, located in the Oakdale neighborhood, represent a transformative effort to convert vacant properties into affordable, single-family residences. A crucial element of this ongoing project was the $1.25 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds provided by the Mobile County Commission, highlighting the Commission's commitment to enhancing local housing and historical preservation. This ARPA investment will eventually fund seven new homes that match the character of Mobile's historic neighborhoods.
District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, who has championed this project, said, "This is a great example of what happens when preservation and progress meet. By building new homes that reflect the character of the Oakdale historic neighborhood, Restore Mobile is honoring the past while creating pathways to a stronger future. The investment of ARPA funds into new infill homes represents stability, opportunity and a renewed sense of community for families that were disproportionately affected by the pandemic."
Working with Watershed Architects and DSW Homes, Restore Mobile designed these homes to match the Oakdale neighborhood's Victorian, Craftsman, and Gulf Coast cottage styles. Restore Mobile's goal is to bring new life to Mobile’s historic neighborhoods by buying and restoring run-down properties, which helps enhance neglected areas and offers affordable homes for families.
This project is supported by American Rescue Plan Act funds awarded to the Mobile County Commission by the U.S. Department of Treasury. The federal backing underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between local government and non-profit organizations to foster sustainable community development. The Mobile County Commission continues to support initiatives that expand housing opportunities and preserve the unique character of its communities.
