MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — Motorists should expect delays on the northernmost portion of Kali-Oka Road beginning Monday, June 1, as Mobile County continues its effort to improve safety, drainage, and drivability along the Kali-Oka Road/College Parkway corridor in Mobile County Commission District 1.

The contractor currently working at the Highway 158 intersection will begin shoulder widening on Kali-Oka Road between Highway 45 and just east of Henry Morgan Road. The work will require a moving single-lane closure with flaggers directing traffic and is expected to continue for approximately one month, weather permitting.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

Meanwhile, the temporary closure of Kali-Oka Road just north of Highway 158 remains in effect as crews continue roadway reconstruction and large drainage structure improvements. The Highway 158 exit remains open, and southbound travel toward the University of Mobile is still available.

This construction project is funded through the 2020 and 2024 Pay-As-You-Go Transportation Improvement Programs, Rebuild Alabama, and the American Rescue Plan Act. Pay-As-You-Go is a method of financing road and bridge improvements with no new taxes or debt. Funds are collected in advance of each road program. Beginning in 1977, Mobile County’s Pay-As-You-Go has committed more than $1 billion to local road improvements. It has been approved by voters each of the 20 times it has appeared on a ballot.
