Application to Expand Chastang Landfill's Service Area and Daily Intake Volume Accepted by Mobile County Commission Sept. 18; Public Comment Period Begins

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. – The Mobile County Commission voted Sept. 18 to accept an application from Waste Management, on behalf of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Mobile, seeking local approval to expand Chastang Landfill’s service area and daily intake capacity. The action also authorized public notices, officially opening the public comment period on the proposed permit modification.

 

Opportunities for public comment:

Oct. 2, 2025: 6 to 7:30 p.m. – Public Awareness Meeting to be hosted by Waste Management at St. Peter the Apostle Church (16650 US-43, Mt Vernon, AL 36560), during which the applicant shall provide general information on the proposal and address questions and concerns of the affected community. Members of the public may submit written questions or comments germane to the proposal in advance via the contact information below.

Nov. 10, 2025: 10 a.m. – Public Hearing and Public Comment Review at the regular Mobile County Commission meeting (Government Plaza Auditorium; 205 Government Street, 1st floor, Mobile, Alabama 36633). The public may submit written comments at any time up to the conclusion of the hearing, or may address the Commission during the public hearing. Anyone wishing to address the Commission on this matter should sign in before the start of the meeting.

Written comments accepted Sept. 18 through close of public hearing on Nov. 10 – The public may submit written comments to the governing body (Mobile County Commission) between the acceptance of the application and the close of the public hearing via email or regular mail to the following:
