MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — Alabama’s Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, held the last full weekend in February, will begin 12:01 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, and ends 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026.

During the three-day tax holiday, qualifying emergency preparedness items may be purchased without Alabama state sales tax, and without county or local sales tax in participating jurisdictions.

Examples of tax-exempt items include:

  • Portable generators priced at $1,000 or less
  • Portable power cords
  • Weather radios
  • Flashlights and lanterns
  • First-aid kits and basic medical supplies
  • Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Emergency ladders
  • Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt, and 9-volt)
  • Tarps, duct tape, and tie-down supplies
  • Fire extinguishers

Certain items are not eligible, including vehicles, firearms, ammunition, and services. All exemptions are governed by rules established by the Alabama Department of Revenue, which administers the holiday statewide. A full list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available at: https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/sales-use/sales-tax-holidays/.

Most of Mobile County’s municipalities are listed as participants in this annual sales tax holiday, which means that state, county, and municipal taxes are waived to help residents prepare for severe weather like hurricanes during the holiday weekend.

Held annually at the start of severe weather season, the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday weekend offers a timely opportunity for residents to restock emergency kits, replace used supplies, and think ahead.
