2018 Pay-As-You-Go on Nov. 6 Ballot

Residents of Mobile County have enjoyed a 41-year success story with the County's Pay-As-You-Go Transportation Improvement Program. On Tues., Nov. 6, voters will once again be asked to decide the future of this very important program. Distinct from the statewide constitutional amendments, the 2018 Pay-As-You-Go Program is listed as a "Special County Election" and is the last measure on the ballot.

The Pay-As-You-Go program started in 1977 and has been approved by Mobile County voters each of the 16 times it has appeared on the ballot. Mobile County is the only county in the state with such a funding mechanism for road improvements. Programs include two years' worth of road and bridge improvements.

The program is a model for road and bridge improvements that does not rely on borrowed money or new taxes. Projects presented for voters' approval include extensive work inside the City of Mobile, improvements in the unincorporated part of the county, and at least one project in each of the other Mobile County municipalities.

This program will complete 48.1 miles of road improvements within the various municipalities of Mobile County, including

-In Mobile: resurface 25 miles of streets, reconstruct a segment of Dauphin Street from Sage Ave. westward to Springhill Hospital to improve the flow of traffic, construct the entrance road to the new Soccer Complex, and extend Nevius Rd. westward from Hillcrest Rd. to Sollie Rd.
-In Prichard: resurface 8.4 miles of streets and replace three bridges
-In Semmes: resurface 2 miles of streets

In the county area more than 25.1 miles of improvements are planned:

-Extend the widening of Airport Blvd. from Snow Rd. South to west of Eliza Jordan Rd. South
-Construct additional lanes to Three Notch Kroner Rd. from Schillinger Rd. South to McDonald Rd.
-Build intersection improvements at several major intersections, including:
o Airport Blvd. at Newman Rd.
o Airport Blvd. at Eliza Jordan Rd.
o Howells Ferry Rd. at Firetower Rd.
o Jeff Hamilton Rd. at Johnson Rd. West

-Resurface Three Notch Kroner Rd. from Schillinger Rd. South eastward to Bush Lane
Resurface Tanner Williams Rd. from Wilmer Rd. westward to the state line
-Reconstruct North McGregor Ave. from Old Shell Rd. to Springhill Ave.
-Resurface Airport Blvd. Service Rd. (north side and south side) from McGregor Ave. eastward to I-65 Service Roads

In total, 73.2 miles will be added or improved. These improvements will accommodate the on-going increases in residential and industrial traffic that Mobile has experienced over the last few decades and keep Mobile County's communities connected through a network of adequate roadways.
