Mobile County Votes to Build $1 Million Baseball Fields After razing the dilapidated remnants of the Alfred P. Brewer Center buildings, the Mobile County Commission is working with citizens to build a $1 million baseball complex at Schillinger and Hitt roads. The three commissioners voted unanimously Monday morning to allocate $94,000 to Driven Engineering for final design, bidding and construction of the complex. The project is expected to be concluded by the end of summer. ?We have a large and growing population of baseball families here in Mobile County, plus we will be able to start hosting tournaments when you combine these fields with the existing Westside Baseball complex already out there,? said Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl, whose district includes the property. The Brewer Center had been a complex for mentally challenged residents, but when it moved its operations, the buildings deteriorated and attracted vagrants and drug users. Mobile County paid the majority of the costs for cleanup of the property with a grant. Working with the Westside Park baseball families and the Mobile Bay Sports Authority, the Mobile County Commission is designing fields to accommodate the hundreds of youths who would use the fields. ?We can put the funding to work on a large, accessible property that will give our kids more recreational facilities,? said Merceria Ludgood, Mobile County Commission president. ?This will be an economic development project as well as a great asset to local families,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson.
