Mobile County Proposal Reinforces Hiring Laws

Posted on: Aug 6th, 2009 | Announcements

The Mobile County Commission will consider a policy at today?s meeting that establishes a penalty for companies that hire illegal workers on county public works jobs and requires county contractors to make their employee records open to inspection. The policy will be considered at the county?s conference meeting at 10 a.m. today, August 6 in the Multi-purpose Room at Mobile Government Plaza. ?We want to do our part to assure that the county enforces established laws on hiring,? said Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, who proposed the policy. The policy would apply to contractors providing $50,000 or more in labor, materials or supplies for a public works contract. Contractors would have to hire U.S. citizens or legal aliens to perform county work and to require that their subcontractors hire legally as well. By the terms of the policy, the county would have reasonable access to the hiring records of the contractors and subcontractors. Any contractor who violates the policy with three or more persons would be prohibited from bidding for any county work for two years. The policy would be effective October 1 at the start of the new fiscal year. ###
