Mobile County Gives Hands-Up to Murphy High

Mobile County commissioners today donated 20 computers to Murphy High School in a gesture to help the school recover from the devastating losses of a Christmas Day tornado that struck the landmark school. All three Mobile County commissioners voted at a recent public meeting to donate the computers to Murphy High rather than to sell them at an online auction site, which has been the usual practice for disposing of surplus inventory. Instead, the commissioners said at the last public meeting that they preferred to donate the computers to Murphy to help the school rebuild its assets. Mobile County turned over 20 IBM computers with monitors and keyboards Wednesday morning to Murphy Vice-Principal Patricia Hunter. Each is loaded with the Windows XP operating system. The computers were loaded onto a truck for delivery to Clark-Shaw High School where students of Murphy reside temporarily until their school is rebuilt. The county surplus is the result of an upgrade to the county commission?s desktop computers. Smaller numbers of computers were donated to other agencies in the area that indicated a need, including the Prichard Animal Shelter and Dumas Wesley Community Center.
