Mobile County Commission Funds USA Student-Athlete Facility

This morning, the Mobile County Commission approved a $2.5 million sponsorship agreement with the University of South Alabama for the Mobile County Center for Academic Success. The center, to be built at the university's new stadium compound, will serve will serve more than 400 student-athletes from all 17 Division I Jaguar sports.

"This presents a great opportunity to support the student-athletes in all sports at USA," said Commission President Connie Hudson. "The 7,800 square foot facility provides the resources for student-athletes to excel academically. We are proud of our partnership with USA and this investment in education here in Mobile County."

The center will be located in the football stadium's administration building. It will provide individual and group study rooms with computers and printers and will also house tutoring facilities and counselors' offices. The Commission's sponsorship ensures permanent naming rights to the center.

Commissioner Merceria Ludgood said,"For many students, athletics is their path to higher education and ultimately self-sufficiency. USA's commitment to its student-athletes provides educational opportunities to our entire region and beyond. The county's contribution is an investment in the young adults who will lead our community."

Commissioner Jerry Carl was out of state and not present for the vote, but said, "The Mobile County Commission is excited about supporting Jaguar sports and all its student-athletes. USA contributes so much to Mobile County. We're happy to help sponsor its programs. We're all Jag fans."
