Mobile County Commission Funds Aerospace School

Posted on: Jul 12th, 2012 | Announcements

Mobile County schools already are getting a lift with the arrival of Airbus through funding approved today by the Mobile County Commission for an aerospace/aviation academy at B.C. Rain High School. The $50,000 in seed money, coming from Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean?s education funds, will be used for constructing and furnishing the aerospace/aviation building on the B.C. Rain campus. ?We?re giving the young people in this community the chance to be involved at an early age in the aerospace field,? Dean said. ?When they leave the school, they can go in all kinds of directions, from maintenance to assembly and engineering.? The partnership for the new academy extends to local businesses and organizations, including ST Aerospace, Airbus, the Mobile Airport Authority, the Mobile Aviation College and the Mobile Area Education Foundation. ?We are keeping kids in schools as well as giving them opportunity for good jobs,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. ?With greater educational options, we can appeal to more of our youths.? ?No one has anything like this in the Gulf Coast region,? Dean noted. He said he had been working on the academy for the past three years, ever since the aerial refueling tanker bid process got underway. ?Already, we?re seeing the multiplier effect of jobs in Mobile County as a result of the Airbus commitment,? noted Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. ?We know the jobs will be there for our own children.?
