MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — Four Love Your Community teams were recognized at the July 16 Mobile County Commission meeting with a total of $5,000 in beautification grants earned through time-banked volunteer service hours.
Commissioner Connie Hudson, who champions the Love Your Community (LYC) program, said, “We’re proud to recognize the four teams receiving grants for their hard work and commitment to litter reduction. Their efforts have a double impact, keeping litter out of our waterways and making Mobile County more beautiful through community-led projects.”
Since the program’s relaunch in 2021, more than 250 teams have earned nearly $60,000 in grants through the LYC Time Bank, with more than 50 teams currently active. Teams earn grant funding by logging volunteer hours tied to litter pickup, beautification, recycling, and similar environmental service efforts in public spaces.
Funded by the Mobile County Commission, LYC is operated in partnership with Keep Mobile Beautiful and Clean Water Future. Program funding is supported in part by the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA).
Grants were awarded to the following teams:
- $1,000 grants (95 service hours)
- Share the Beach Litter Patrol – Dauphin Island (Commission District 3)
Led by Miranda Radcliff, this team picks up litter while patrolling for sea turtle nests. Grant funds will support biodegradable materials to better mark nests and enhance public education efforts. - Satsuma Lions Club (Commission District 1)
Led by Dany Gray, the team will focus on Satsuma High School, repairing a brick planter, planting flowers and satsuma trees, and treating sidewalks for weeds and fire ants to refresh the campus and surrounding area.
- Share the Beach Litter Patrol – Dauphin Island (Commission District 3)
- $1,500 grants (145 service hours)
- RevitalizeDIP (Commission District 3)
Led by Yvette Young, the group is expanding outreach with new signage to raise awareness about litter pickup and beautification, especially for residents not active on social media. Previous projects include two pocket gardens along Dauphin Island Parkway. - Mobile Japanese Gardens (Commission District 2)
Led by Don Fry, this team is continuing work on a storage shed for gardening tools, now decorated with a hand-painted mural that adds beauty to the grounds during ongoing renovations.
- RevitalizeDIP (Commission District 3)

The award-winning Love Your Community program originally launched in 2018 to engage residents in tackling the community’s litter problem and promoting a cleaner, healthier Mobile County. More than 65 teams and 600 volunteers were involved with the effort pre-pandemic, but participation slowed during COVID-19. The program relaunched on Earth Day 2021 with the time-banking incentive model.
