MONTGOMERY ? Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood has been elected president of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama, the statewide association that represents Alabama?s county governments. Ludgood has previously served as ACCA?s first and second vice president, and she has served on the board of directors. She is only the third female elected president of the 85-year-old organization. ?At the county level, ours is not a fight to see who gets the credit. It is simply to get the job done because for many people in this state, we are the last line of defense, and they depend on us,? Ludgood said. ?I believe ACCA represents what is best about Alabama. We work hard and do not sit around waiting on somebody to do for us what we can for ourselves.? ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield said he is confident in Ludgood?s ability to serve the Association?s membership well. ?We are excited about the leadership, energy and dedication President Ludgood will provide for our Association and our members,? Brasfield said. ?I believe Merceria thoroughly understands the challenges of both urban and rural county governments in Alabama, and she has vision to help move county government forward statewide.? Ludgood, a lawyer, has represented Mobile County?s District 1 since 2007. The Association of County Commissions of Alabama is a statewide organization representing county government in Alabama. ACCA promotes improved county government services in Alabama, offers educational programs for county officials and their staff members, administers insurance programs for county governments and employees, offers legal advice, and represents the interests of county government before state and federal organizations and agencies. The activities of the Association are governed by a board of directors composed of three officers, past presidents and representatives elected from 12 Alabama districts. ###
