Let the Play Begin: County Builds Calcedeavor PlayWorld

Posted on: Sep 18th, 2015 | Announcements

The release of hundreds of balloons Friday afternoon will herald the official start of play at the new, $73,000 playground at Calcedeavor Elementary School. The opening ceremony, which will also include Native American song and dance, is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow, September 18 on the school grounds at 20500 Patillo Road, Mt. Vernon. The dedication of the playground, funded by the Mobile County Commission, features a very modern play world of slither slides, a silo, catwalks, hopscotch climbers, a spinami and more. ?We have a blue-ribbon school here, so obviously the educational component is strong,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, who tapped her Education Fund for the playground. ?But health, fitness, fellowship and plain old fun is an essential part of school, and I?m glad the County Commission is able to provide some of that.? Most of the students from Calcedeavor are from the MOWA Choctaw Indian tribe and in addition to basic coursework, the school teaches the native American Indian language and the history and traditions of the tribe. ?It?s a great playground, but it?s not your mama?s playground,? noted Mobile County Commission President Jerry Carl. ?You?ll need the children to teach you how to play.? The Mobile County Commission has provided an average of $1.5 million a year to schools and libraries in the county over the past decade. ?Our children are the future, and where we can, we try support our schools,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson.
