Kids Give Thanks for Help With School Dollar Deficit

Posted on: Oct 16th, 2009 | Announcements

It?s hard to miss the gratitude when 1,000 students gather to give thanks. The school budget showed a deficit that Mobile County Commissioners helped plug with a major cash infusion this year. Deborah Altman, principal of Satsuma High School, is so relieved by the promise of county money for teacher equipment this year that she is assembling 68 school teachers and 1,000 students to honor Mobile County District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. The assembly, as well as a student speech and performance, is set for 9 a.m. Monday, October 19, at Satsuma High, 1 Gator Circle. ?If it weren?t for the County Commission, my instructional program would be greatly compromised,? Altman said. The Mobile County Commission last month approved a request by the Mobile County Public School System to provide $200,000 to four schools that had their classroom supply money eliminated by the state. The money funds everything from paper and ink cartridges, to pigs and dissection equipment for science classes. The money also will go to help teachers at Baker High School, Hutchens Elementary School and Phillips Preparatory School, located throughout the county. ?It will go a long way to help those schools that didn?t qualify for the stimulus package money,? said Commission president Mike Dean.? For the special assembly at Satsuma, there will be student speeches and performances. Refreshments will follow the formal program. ###
