Huge Citizen Turnout for Animal Adoption

Posted on: Aug 24th, 2009 | Announcements

Mobile County residents responded to a call for help and adopted a record 71 animals from the Mobile County Animal Shelter at a special adoption event Saturday. The numbers included 61 dogs and 10 cats. ?Lots of animals got saved thanks to a spectacular response from citizens and some great volunteers,? said Mike Dean, president of the Mobile County Commission. The shelter was filled to overflowing when the county asked residents to rescue the dogs and cats because it had run out of room to house them. It is an ongoing problem because the county takes in more than three times the numbers of animals that have been adopted out. The county is charged by the state with the responsibility of animal control. Unlike other animal shelters, the county can not limit the number of animals it picks up and must respond to all animal complaints within its jurisdiction. ?I urge citizens to confine their animals and to spay and neuter them so we don?t end up with unwanted animals,? Commissioner Stephen Nodine said. The county will be open regularly on Saturdays for adoptions starting September 12. It also will offer extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays to accommodate people who work during the day, starting September 15. ?Citizens asked us for the extended hours and we hope they will choose now to rescue an animal from our shelter when they want a new pet for their family,? said Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. ###
