Posted on: Mar 13th, 2014 | Press Releases

Spring is almost here and now is the time to get rid of that old paint, pesticides and automotive fluids taking up space in your garage. Since those chemicals can harm the environment, the Mobile County Commission will sponsor a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The event will be held on Saturday, March 22, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Grounds, formerly known as the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds. The event gives Mobile County residents an opportunity to properly dispose of household hazardous waste. The waste collection day is part of a series of drop-off events for hazardous wastes that will be sponsored by the county over the next three years with a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This second event will be limited to household hazardous waste ONLY and will include: ? Paints (Oil Based and Latex)  Household Cleaners  Automotive Fluids  Pesticides  Herbicides  Fungicides  Pool Chemicals  Aerosols Items not being accepted are: medications, explosives (flares and ammunition), appliances, tires and computers. The event is open to households only and excludes contractors and commercial outlets. In the future, the Mobile County Commission will hold drop-off events for electronics, batteries and similar items. For all events, trained personnel will be on-site to oversee the collection, transportation and disposal. Consistent with EPA and Alabama regulations, these events will be open to residents of Mobile County only. ###
