Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Applications Accepted

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. -- The Mobile County Grants Department received final approval for its Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and will begin accepting applications for down payment assistance grants up to $50,000.
Applications will be accepted beginning Aug. 4, 2025, until funding is depleted.
This is a Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Program designed to increase the supply of affordable housing for low-to moderate-income (LMI) households in response to the Hurricane Sally & Zeta recovery efforts for residents of Mobile County. While this program will give priority to LMI homeowners and renters who were impacted by the 2020 hurricanes, Sally & Zeta. Individuals who are on the path to homeownership are also encouraged to apply.
Process summary:
- Interested applicants initiate the process by emailing a pre-approval letter from a reputable lender to Mobile County’s Grants Department.
- Applicants will be required to submit proof of Mobile County residency during hurricanes Sally and Zeta (September and October 2020) and complete a homebuyer counseling program.
- After these steps are complete, the homebuyer and lender complete the application for assistance and provide all requested documentation.
- If approved, a home inspection is required before final approval.
- Grant recipients will be required to sign an agreement with Mobile County that includes a term in which they must live in the home as their primary residence.
Mobile County Grants Department held multiple information sessions about this program in various locations throughout the county between June 18 and Aug. 5.
