Grants Help Fund County Sidewalk Projects

Posted on: Jul 2nd, 2015 | Announcements

A federal highway grant received last week will pave the way for sidewalks along Old Pascagoula Road and near Allentown Elementary School on Howells Ferry Road. ?This kind of infrastructure keeps our citizens safe,? said Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. ?We appreciate our partners who help us make this possible.? The Mobile County Commission had applied for the $200,000 grant to build the sidewalks on Old Pascagoula Road from Horseshoe Lane to Theodore Dawes Road, and on Howell?s Ferry Road from Allentown Elementary School to Snow Road. Construction is expected to start in the next 12 to 18 months. The grants will provide a sidewalk for citizens who use Pascagoula Road as a pedestrian path to nearby stores. The Howells Ferry Road sidewalk will be instrumental in providing a safer walkway for Allentown school children. ?These new sidewalks will be a major safety improvement, not just for the pedestrian traffic, but for vehicles on the roadway that are competing for the same space,? said Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl. ?In addition, the sidewalks add curb appeal to the roadways.? The Mobile County Commission will match the grant with an additional $150,000 for the projects. The grant money comes from the Federal Highway Administration?s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). ?This is good for our community and good for our children and we?ll continue to pursue these grants,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood.
