Government Plaza Roof Work Starts Fire

Posted on: May 3rd, 2014 | Announcements

Mobile County has started cleanup of a fire that broke out during the early morning hours on Saturday on the 8th floor roof of the north tower, causing mainly water and smoke damage to the area. ?This is a setback for us but it will have very little impact on the timetable for completion of the project,? said Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. She said the damage should be covered entirely by the contractor?s insurance company. The big question facing county officials is whether the affected area of the courts will have to close on Monday. The circuit courts, jury assembly room and law library are located on the north tower?s 8th floor. Mobile County officials have called in private contractors to start an aggressive cleanup of the area and will meet with court officials Sunday afternoon to determine whether there will be a partial closure of Government Plaza and how it will affect the citizens called for jury duty each week. A 4 p.m. news conference has been called for Sunday afternoon in the atrium of Government Plaza to update the public. The Mobile Fire Department responded to the two-alarm fire at 3:21 a.m. after smoke alarms were triggered by the roof fire. Hot roof tar is suspected of starting the fire that blew out two windows on the 8th floor. The interior damage is confined mainly to smoke and water damage. No damage estimate is available at this time. ###
