Filing Error Requires County Action

An oversight by Mobile County administration to file a bond for the newly-elected Mobile County treasurer will require the county to take additional measures to assure that Treasurer-elect Phil Benson can take office January 14. Many individuals elected to office in the November 6 general election were required to file bonds by December 26. Benson had signed the bond, but Mobile County administration failed to file it because of confusion about the filing date. Consequently, the Probate Court of Mobile County vacated the position. To remedy the matter, the treasurer has asked to be appointed to the position by Mobile County Commissioners, who have the authority to make the appointment. The commissioners will take up the proposal at their upcoming meeting January 14, the same day that the treasurer would have taken office otherwise. ?I certainly support Mr. Benson?s appointment to the position to which he was duly elected,? said County commissioner Connie Hudson on Monday. Benson, a resident of Dauphin Island, won the popular vote in the general election after winning an earlier Republican primary. The position pays $35,500 a year, and oversees a staff of five people.
