Field of Dreams Comes to Blount High School

Posted on: May 1st, 2009 | Announcements

Blount High School had the baseball program, but no baseball field. The Mobile County Commission hopes to remedy the matter when it brings the big equipment out at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 4 to break ground on a regulation baseball field at the school, 5450 Lott Road. The $148,000 baseball field is a field of dreams for Blount Principal Yvonne Matthews. ?Just practicing is an ordeal, requiring transportation to the fields on Sage Avenue or Cottage Hill Park,? she said. ?Even our home games aren?t at home.? The new diamond will hopefully encourage involvement in the baseball program at Blount. Participation in organized baseball among African-American youth has declined dramatically over the last 25 years, both locally and nationwide. Yet, Mobile had long been fertile ground for developing some of the nation?s great players, including Hank Aaron and Satchel Paige. The Blount project will include new sod, a sprinkler system, a back stop, dugouts and a new chain link fence. The architect is Clark, Geer, Latham and Associates Inc. Construction will be done by Apex Construction LLC. The project is expected to be completed the first week of July. ###
