Mobile County Opens Cypress Creek Golf Course with Soft Launch

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — The Mobile County Commission marked the soft launch of its all-new Cypress Creek Golf Course Wednesday, Sept. 23, opening the new public course for limited advance-reservation play beginning Sept. 25.
The 18-hole, Jerry Pate-designed course was built from the ground up on the site of the former Linksman Golf Course as part of Mobile County’s development of Riviére du Chien Park.
“We set out to build a first-class public golf course that would challenge experienced golfers, welcome new players and give our young golfers a place to practice and compete,” said District 3 Commissioner Randall Dueitt, who has championed the project since taking office in 2020. “Cypress Creek delivers on that vision, and I’m proud that we’re now able to open it for the public to enjoy.”
Cypress Creek Golf Course will initially operate on a limited schedule to give newly established turf additional time to mature before operations expand.
Public play begins Sept. 25, with limited advance-reservation tee times for foursomes available Fridays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Green fees are $65, including cart. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 251-753-9540.
The driving range and adjacent tennis and pickleball courts will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tennis and pickleball are free and first-come, first-served. Driving range baskets are $8 for small and $12 for large.
Mobile County Commissioners Dueitt, Connie Hudson and Merceria Ludgood were joined by project partners and community members for Wednesday’s ceremony at the course’s new driving range building. Additional speakers included Mobile City Councilor Ben Reynolds; Steve Dana, representing the Jerry Pate Company; Lev Holly, MCPSS interim athletic director; Pastor John T. Phalo of Greater Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church; and the Rev. Patrick Driscoll of St. Dominic Catholic Church. The event included a ceremonial first drive and golf cart tours of the new course.
Mobile County acquired the approximately 100-acre former Linksman property in 2022 using Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act funding, which is revenue sharing from offshore energy production. The property has a history as a golf course dating to the early 1970s but had been unused for about 15 years before Mobile County acquired it. Cypress Creek is an entirely new course on the former golf course site.
Watermark Design Group LLC provided park engineering and design, with Ben M. Radcliff Contractor Inc. handling park infrastructure construction. The Jerry Pate-designed golf course was constructed by Mid-America Golf & Landscape Inc.
The project also includes a driving range, dedicated youth golf practice area, tennis and pickleball courts, parking, roadways, and an office and maintenance building. The new driving range building was designed by Dakinstreet Architects and constructed by Tindle Construction Inc.
The golf course is part of the larger Riviére du Chien Park development, which will add public access to the Dog River watershed. Future park amenities include waterfront access, picnic areas, a boardwalk, and an ADA-accessible kayak launch. A permanent clubhouse, playground, and other amenities are planned for future phases.
