County Readying 80 Tons of Sand

Posted on: Feb 11th, 2010 | Announcements

The Mobile County Commission today is readying 80 tons of sand for delivery into the county if the predicted snowstorm strikes the area on Friday. It also has made provisions for the Mobile County Animal Shelter to assure that staff is available at the shelter throughout the storm. Meantime, the county has set a meeting for 2 p.m. today to consider the closure of the courthouse on Friday, if weather predictions indicate that driving will be hazardous. Mobile County?s primary focus in the event of a snowstorm will be the 150 bridges located throughout the county that are in jeopardy of icing and creating a traffic hazard. Trucks will be stationed at three sites in the county, ready for deployment if reports of icing come in. About mid-afternoon today, the county will begin stockpiling the sand. It will bring in track hoes and front loaders to dig up the sand from its sand pit in south Mobile County and deliver it to three strategically located ?campsites? in south, north and west Mobile. Employees are on standby beginning this evening to deploy the trucks, if necessary. Mobile County Sheriff?s deputies will be helping in identifying bridges that ice over. ###
