County Fast-Tracks Leroy Stevens Road Repair

Posted on: Jun 25th, 2013 | Announcements

Mobile County Public Works has fast-tracked the repair of Leroy Stevens Road between Country and Nugget drives, and will start actual construction as soon as gas lines are relocated. County engineers moved quickly on design plans and permit approvals to limit the time that the roadway would be closed. The first phase of any project requires design and permit approval before utility relocation and construction can start. The engineers expect the gas lines to be moved within weeks, clearing the way to begin building the new, 120-foot bridge that will replace two existing sets of pipe culverts. ?A project of this size normally would take one to two years,? said Deputy Public Works Director Ricky Mitchell. ?Barring no major problem, we think it will be done in another 2 ½ to 3 months after the lines are relocated.? The county discovered a failed pipeline under the roadway in mid-March and closed the road immediately because of the risk of an unstable road bed. The street is barricaded around the two culverts and detour signs are posted. County engineers are asking motorists to please take designated routes around the repair site. ###
