County Commissioners Cite Economic Advantages

Posted on: Jun 12th, 2009 | Announcements

Forbes Magazine says Mobile will rebound from the recession better than most cities in the country, naming it as one of the top 10 best U.S. cities for economic recovery. ?We are positioned very well for when the economy bounces back, and that?s not even factoring in the tanker contract,? said Commission president Mike Dean. ?If we land that, we?ll be as strong as any place in the country.? Commissioner Stephen Nodine noted: ?This shows the importance of a growing and diverse economy. We?ve done that recently in Mobile County with steel, aerospace, shipping, shipbuilding and medical care.? Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, whose district includes the huge ThyssenKrupp steel mill project, noted that while unemployment has edged up, there is ?a lot to be proud of and a lot to be optimistic about.? Mobile?s economy has earned notice on numerous occasions over the last couple years for its strength and resilience. In April, Forbes cited the Mobile community as one of the nation?s top 10 best mid-sized cities for jobs. Moodys economy.com last year predicted that Mobile?s economy would be the fastest growing in the next five years among all mid-sized metro areas. Forbes based the rankings for its latest list on things like projected gross domestic product, unemployment figures, home prices and incomes.
