Collection Event Scheduled for Old TVs, Monitors

Posted on: Sep 9th, 2015 | Announcements

Got a super-sized television set or an old monitor seeking a final resting place? Don?t miss the Mobile County TV & Monitor Collection Event set for 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 23 through Saturday, September 26 at the Mobile County Recycling Center, 7450 Hitt Road. The funding for the television collection was obtained through a Coastal Impact Assistance Grant (CIAP) intended to offset the risks to communities located near off-shore oil and gas drilling. Funding is necessary since flat-screen technology made old monitors and televisions obsolete. The change decimated the demand for the recycled tube glass used in them and created what industry experts call a ?glass tsunami? as stockpiles of the useless material and associated toxic chemicals accumulated across the country. Television sets will be accepted during this special collection event only! Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast, operator of the Mobile County Recycling Center, will continue to accept its normal recyclables during this period, while also providing the space to collect the TVs and monitors. ?We don?t want these toxic chemicals in our landfills or along our roadways because of a lack of options for disposal,? said Mobile County Commission President Jerry Carl. ?Our collection events give citizens reasonable options for disposing of these items without harm to the environment,? said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. The bulk of this waste is being stored, sent to landfills or smelters, or disposed of in other ways that experts say are environmentally destructive. ?The problem now is that the need to dispose of this waste has been growing, but demand for the glass that comes from it has never been lower,? said Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson. ?This event provides a responsible option for all our citizens.?
