Bayou La Batre Water System Upgrades Construction Begins Soon

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. – Mobile County Commission held its pre-construction meeting on July 10 for the Bayou La Batre Wastewater Outfall line. Construction should begin in early September.
This is important news for the residents of Bayou La Batre, many of whom are quite interested in the project because the community was highly impacted by the 2010 oil spill.
Bayou La Batre’s water system infrastructure upgrade projects to improve water quality and quantity are funded by the RESTORE Act, with funds distributed by the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council.
“These federally-funded projects take time. I promised to keep Bayou La Batre residents informed of progress on the water infrastructure upgrades, so they’ll be pleased to know construction will begin soon,” said Mobile County Commission President Randall Dueitt, who represents District 3.
This is part of several infrastructure projects funded by the RESTORE Act. These infrastructure projects are designed to restore, improve, and protect water resources, as well as reduce excess nutrients and pollutants to local watersheds. This project is funded in the State Expenditure Plan.
The Mobile County Commission is administering the project on behalf of the City of Bayou La Batre. Since the Notice of Award was received and Commissioners voted to accept grant funding for this project in May of 2022, additional steps completed by the Mobile County Commission and Bayou La Batre Utilities included: completing federal paperwork to ensure grant compliance, engineering, design and permitting, project bidding and bid award.
Construction will begin once the contractor, Garney Construction, orders and procures materials. While all construction activities are weather-dependent, it’s estimated that the Bayou La Batre Wastewater Outflow Line construction should be completed by September 2025.
The total contract cost for the Outfall Extension Project is about $16 million. Funding is provided by the RESTORE Act.
