Bayou La Batre Hurricane Road Gets Upgrade

Posted on: May 18th, 2010 | Announcements

An essential hurricane evacuation road from Bayou la Batre is getting a makeover starting this week that will help deliver south Mobile County residents more efficiently along the Irvington Bayou la Batre Highway to the Interstate 10 interchange. ?This roadway is essential for the traffic coming out of my south county district,? said Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean. ?Not only must we respond to increasing traffic demand, but we are looking to safeguard our people in the case of a flood-related evacuation. The Irvington Bayou la Batre Highway will be improved from about the area of Highway 90 to State Road 188. The 5.7 mile roadway will be widened by one foot on each side of the two-lane highway and the entire length will be repaved. Funding for the project comes from federal stimulus money. Other north-south arteries have been upgraded in recent years to accommodate increasing traffic in south Mobile County. Bellingrath and Padgett Switch Roads also were upgraded in recent years.
