MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. – Mobile County Commissioners signed a key steel beam for the main building of the Mobile County Aquatic Center on Aug. 8 to mark Phase 1 of construction's approximate halfway point.

This state-of-the-art, multi-building 40,000-square-foot swimming facility is expected to open in early summer 2026.

Mobile County Commission broke ground on the Aquatic Center on Sept. 6, 2024.

“It’s so gratifying to be at this point in the Aquatic Center construction process so quickly. I’m looking forward to opening this world-class facility for swimmers of all levels next summer. This infrastructure investment will benefit Mobile County for generations, helping to foster both economic growth and a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Commissioner Connie Hudson, who spearheads the Mobile County Sportsplex project (Soccer Complex, Aquatic Center, public/private partnership waterpark).

Current specifications for Mobile County Aquatic Center Phase I:

  • Outdoor 25-yard by 50-meter competition pool with a 12-foot diving well, eight lanes, and a large spectator viewing area
  • Indoor 25-yard by 25-meter training/warm-up pool, along with restrooms, locker rooms, offices, and meeting areas
  • Concession building with additional office space
  • Mechanical building
  • 127 parking spots

The approximately $25.8 million Aquatic Center Phase I is mostly funded by Mobile County Commission through capital improvement funds, Commission district funds, and federal grants. The City of Mobile and Mobile County Public School System have contributed $3.5 million toward its construction.

When complete, Phase I of the Mobile County Aquatic Center will meet the requirements for accreditation by USA Swimming. According to the City of Mobile Swim Association, when fully built (comprising Phase I and Phase II), the Mobile County Aquatic Center will be the second-largest aquatic facility in Alabama.

Aquatic Center Progress:

  • The outdoor competition pool is built.
  • Building C (mechanical building) is approximately 60% complete.
  • Building B (concessions building) is approximately 20% complete.
  • Building A, which will house the 25-yard by 25-meter indoor warm-up/instructional pool, lobby, and restroom/locker room facilities, is approximately 5% complete.
