MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — As the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Mobile County Commission is inviting Mobile County students in grades K-12 to participate in the America 250 Youth Civic Reflection Contest.
The contest encourages students to reflect on the question, "250 Years Later, What Does Freedom Mean to You Today?" through original artwork, photography, video, and written expression.
Students may submit either an original piece of artwork or a photo or short reel accompanied by a 250-word caption. Entries are due June 22 and should be submitted via email to publicaffairs@mobilecountyal.gov.
Selected students will be recognized by the Mobile County Commission and invited to present their work at Government Plaza.
"Few generations have experienced a milestone like our nation's 250th anniversary," said Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. "As we reflect on the ideals that launched the United States of America, it's important that we also listen to the voices who will carry those ideals forward. This contest gives Mobile County students a chance to add their voices to this historic moment. By sharing what freedom means to them today, they are helping us reflect not only on our nation’s past, but on the future we hope to build together."
The America 250 Youth Civic Reflection Contest is part of Mobile County's broader efforts to commemorate the nation's semiquincentennial and encourage civic engagement among young people.
To be eligible, students must be Mobile County residents currently enrolled in grades K-12. Photo and video submissions must include a 250-word caption responding to the contest theme. All participants will receive a gift or prize, and winners will receive certificates and additional prizes. Judging will take place June 23-24, with winners notified June 25.
