Pet Owners: Are You Prepared For Emergencies?

When an unexpected emergency occurs, most households are prepared for the needs of the family.

But are you prepared for the needs of your pet? Here are a few tips to make sure you can handle the unexpected.

  1. Prepare A Kit For Your Pet. Your pet emergency supply kit should include food, water, medicines and medical records, first aid kit, collar with ID tag, harness or leash, important documents, crate or other pet carrier, sanitation, a picture of you and your pet together and familiar items. Download checklist.
  2. Make A Plan For What You Will Do. It's important to plan in advance what you will do in an emergency. Anticipate where you will go in your home or if you must evacuate, take your pets with you. Keep in mind your pets may not be allowed inside public shelters, so try to secure appropriate lodging in advance. Find out before an emergency if any facilities in our area might be possible options for you and your pets. Please note that during an emergency the Mobile County Animal Shelter is not equipped to house pets not already a part of the shelter.
  3. Be Ready For Whatever May Happen. Regardless of the type of emergency, you should always be prepared. By simply preparing yourself, you can be ready for the unexpected.
