As part of the Tuesday Talkies film series, "His Girl Friday" (1940), a fast-talking screwball comedy directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, will be shown on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. at the Cresent Theater. The story follows ace newspaper reporter Hildy Johnson (Russell), who has decided to leave the hectic world of journalism to get married and settle into a more conventional life. Her editor — and ex-husband — Walter Burns (Grant) has other plans. Desperate to keep both his star reporter and his former wife, Walter lures Hildy back into covering one last story: the impending execution of Earl Williams, a mild-mannered man accused of murdering a police officer. As Hildy digs into the case, she uncovers political corruption and doubts about Williams’ guilt. Meanwhile, Walter schemes to sabotage Hildy’s new fiancé and delay her departure, using every trick in the book. The newsroom becomes a whirlwind of rapid-fire dialogue, ethical dilemmas and romantic tension. Blending sharp satire of the press with romantic sparring, His Girl Friday is celebrated for its lightning-quick banter, progressive portrayal of a career-driven woman and the electric chemistry between its two leads. Tickets are $10 at the door, with happy hour pricing from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information, go to www.ticketweb.com/event/tuesday-talkies-non-silent-films-crescent-theater-tickets/14183354.
