VUZUMAZULU: THE BLACK SOLARIUM

Jun 6th, 2025 - Mar 1st, 2026 ·

"Vuzumazulu: The Black Solarium," an Abantu cultural exposé by Abaddon "Apollo" Ben Yakongo, is a portal into the forgotten narratives of Africa's past, at the Mobile Museum of Art now through March 1, 2026, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Vuzumazula” translates to “awaken heaven,” representing the radiant truths that illuminate the forgotten corners of humanity's shared history. The term “Black Solarium” reflects the transformative power of light and how the rich essence of Black identity absorbs and refracts it into something extraordinary.

Through the lens of mysticism, tradition and spirituality, Apollo’s work bridges the gap between the African continent and Black America, offering proof that the descendants of the transatlantic slave trade, including those from the Clotilda, trace their lineage to the Abantu people of Ouidah, present-day Benin. "Vuzumazula" is a celebration of heritage, a testament to the power of art, and a call to awaken the heavens within everyone.
