MOBILE IN MOURNING: DEATH PRACTICES IN THE VICTORIAN ERA

Oct 17th, 2025 - Jun 7th, 2026 ·

Mobile in Mourning: Death Practices in the Victorian Era is on display until Sunday, June 7, 2026, at The History Museum of Mobile. This exhibition delves into the rich history of the elaborate death practices that occurred during the Victorian Era and how they continued and evolved into the 20th Century. Drawing from the museum's collection, the exhibition explores how and why these customs came to be. Artifacts highlighted in the exhibition include mourning gowns, jewelry, memento moris, coffins and hair art to provide a window into the lives of 19th- and 20th-Century Mobilians during times of mourning. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is FREE for members and children 5 and under; $14 for adults; $12 for seniors 65 and up; $12 for active military and students; $10.50 for ages 13 to 18; and $8 for children 6 to 12.
