Feb 4th, 2023 - Feb 5th, 2023 ·
You are invited to attend the Fifth Annual "Spirit of Our Ancestors Festival" in and around Mobile's Africatown community, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Mobile County Training School. Excitement and concern continue to grow about the plight of Historic Africatown, the only 19th-century settlement founded by Africans who were transported on the last known slave ship to America, the Clotilda. The spotlight on Africatown grew following the Oct. 2022 debut of the Netflix-Obama-backed documentary film, Descendant, which followed descendants of the Clotilda Africans and community leaders after Clotilda's spectacular discovery four years ago. And now, the documentary is on the shortlist of films that may receive a 2023 Academy Award nomination. Also, last year, the World Monuments Fund announced in March 2022 that it placed Africatown on its 2022 Watch List of 25 global sites of significance in need of preservation. The event is free to the public. For more information visit: www.theclotildastory.com/events
