Join history buffs for the Third Annual Boyington Oak Festival on May 20 and 21 at the Oakleigh House Museum.
The Boyington Oak in Mobile, Alabama, is a historic tree with a fascinating story that dates back to the early 19th century. According to legend, the oak tree was named after Charles Boyington, a man who was wrongly accused of murder and executed in 1835. Before he died, he proclaimed his innocence and said an oak would grow from his heart to prove that he did not commit the murder. The oak did grow and now, at almost 200 years old, it stands tall in the Church Street cemetery.
Over the years, the Boyington Oak became a symbol of justice, perseverance, and hope. People come from far and wide to see the tree, which is a protected landmark in the City of Mobile.
