Feb 2nd, 2023 17:30-20:00
The Clotilda Descendants Association invites you to a special showing of the acclaimed Netflix documentary, Descendant, as well as many other films about the history of Africatown. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023, from 5:30 pm to 8 p.m. at the Ben May Library. Documentary filmmaker Margaret Brown (“The Order of Myths”, “The Great Invisible”) returns to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama to document the search for and historic discovery of The Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive in the United States, illegally carrying enslaved Africans. After a century of secrecy and speculation, the 2019 discovery of the ship turns attention toward the Descendant community of Africatown and presents a moving portrait of a community actively grappling with and fighting to preserve their heritage while examining what justice looks like today. This event is free and open to all. No RSVP is required. A Q&A panel will follow the film screening. For more information visit: www.theclotildastory.com
