The Historic Avenue and the Alabama Contemporary Art Center are hosting a Block Party celebrating HACC’s first anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. on the Avenue. The block party format will highlight local Back, Indigenous, and People of Color-owned businesses and center community conversations on sustainable entrepreneurship, its relationship to the arts, and its role in neighborhood revitalization. There will be DJs, food trucks, art activities, and a BIPOC Maker’s Market. Local BIPOC makers, chefs, and business owners will be provided tent space and inclusion at the event through an application process that prioritizes homegrown entrepreneurship and creative placemaking. The event will open to the public at 11 a.m., following the Gulf Coast Challenge Parade on MLK Avenue. The key topic of discussion during the event will be “The Future of the Avenue.” Following the discussion there will be spoken word and dance performances. This event is free to the public.
