Oct 24th, 2021 10:00 AM-2:00 PM
Join Greensboro, Alabama based textile artist, Aaron Sanders Headm for a day getting to know your indigo vat at the Mobile Museum of Art!
Saturday, Oct. 24, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will first learn how to dye natural fiber goods in vats and how to maintain vats for longest lasting color. After learning a brief history of global shibori traditions, participants will learn a few basic resist techniques, with a concentration on folded, tied, and clamped resist. A yard of fabric per student will be provided for experimentation, but participants should feel highly encouraged to bring their own goods to dye. Like materials made from natural fibers, and cellulose (cotton, linen, rayon) accepts color best. Pre-wash all fabric in hot water before the workshop. You should wear old clothing that can be stained, including shoes, or bring an apron and bring a pair of rubber gloves with a high sleeve, like dishwashing gloves. Aaron will have dye kits available for purchase, including all ingredients needed to make a vat, if you’d like to continue dyeing at home. Cost is $145 nonmembers and $125 for members, to register visit https://www.mobilemuseumofart.com/learn/adults/other-adultclasses/shibori.
