Mobile County Approves River Oil Protection Systems
July 12, 2010

Mobile County Commissioners today approved an engineering contract for oil pollution protection systems to be installed in the Dog and East Fowl Rivers in Mobile County.

The systems will defend against the infiltration of oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill.  They will be placed at entrances to the two rivers in a configuration that accounts for water flow and maximizes the capture of oil.

The county had initially anticipated that it had the funds for only one of the two projects.  But it has obtained ocean boom for both projects at no cost from the state, allowing it to invest State of Alabama grant funds from BP in the engineering, installation, operation and maintenance of the projects.

The state of Alabama has encouraged the county of Mobile to apply for the grant money, which was done today.
